Stephen Harper Hates The Canadian Charter of Rights of Freedoms

Stephen Harper's Regime has been Fighting the
T
he Charter of Rights of Freedoms,

since the first days he was elected prime minister.

Youth who get It!

Harper Would Made Mince Meat Out of the Charter.
Bob Rae on the 30 Anniversary of
The Charter of Rights of Freedoms
Harper Tells You Exactly What He Thinks About You!

Reached from Chile Stephen Harper a Statement!

"In terms of this as an anniversary, I think it's an interesting and important step, but I would point out that the Charter remains inextricably linked to the patriation of the Constitution and the divisions around that matter, which as you know are still very real in some parts of the country," Harper said.

Harper had also been asked to comment on perceived problems with the application of the Charter in the courts, but he said he didn't want to wade into that issue.

But many Conservatives have criticized the Charter, saying some have taken advantage of the document to drag out court cases. There's also a view that it has allowed judges to make laws rather than parliamentarians."

Harper dismissively labelled it Divisive. He had no proof of it, but he is always pulling this shit (Kent). Reminiscent of the Long Form Census which they vilified with the use of hearsay, and an number unsubstantiated complaints!

Bring on the Tipping Point ~ Declare Harper Land a Failed State ~ The Big Giant head is Top Heavy ~ All Together Now...... Push!

Harper's balanced approach
 Have we Finally Reached
the Tipping Point?
Will we finally take Harper by the short and curlies and throw him to the curb? God knows we have had our opportunities. Some of us thought his infamous speech in 1997 would have made him Disappear. Some thought that the fact that he wanted to take us headlong into the quagmire of Iraq to find those Weapons of mass destruction, might have done it. He even plagiarized a Speech made by John Howard, then the Australian Prime Minister which many say was actually written in Washington.

Failing to wake up then, we have continued to ignore countless instances of abuse of privilege, power, bad legislation, constant campaigning and incompetent and backward governance by this so-called leader and his so-called "Harper Government." Here are a few more of those instances, none of which have sufficiently aroused a sense of obligation on the part of Canadians to protect themselves from abuse.

This is a copy of a comment that I made way back in 2004, it was reposted then by a stranger on another site,  and which still floats around the web these years later. I searched and found it quite easily again today.

I will put it up here as an example of the current length of that list. Keep in mind that this one is over three years old and that at the time I wrote it right off the Top of My Head. One can only imagine how long such a list must necessarily be today. This is Pre-Colvin, Pre-Toews, Pre-gazebo, ....... And three and  half  years before RackNine, Robocalls, and yet another incidence of Election rigging.

Three and a half years ago this was ONLY a partial list!
And Today, we are really no closer to getting rid of the beast, although some are starting to stir. We must remain vigilant, we must continue to apply pressure to the Harper Government.

Guelph Ontario, May 02, 2011
OTTAWA  Citizen ~ An Elections Canada investigation into black ops "robocalls" was focused on a Conservative party campaign in Guelph, Ont., documents obtained by Postmedia News and the Ottawa Citizen show.
A court order executed on an Edmonton call centre in November specifically refers to records related to the campaign of Conservative candidate Marty Burke in Guelph, where many voters reported receiving pre-recorded messages that falsely claimed their polling stations had moved.

All too Plausible to think the Conservatives are Involved in the Robocall Scandal
Andrew Coyne.  "We do not know whether the calls were made by members of the Conservative party. We do not know whether any Conservative authorized them, or even knew about them. We do not know whether anyone was prevented from voting, or had their vote changed, as a result, nor do we know whether the results of any riding were affected.
But my God, what we know is disturbing enough. There were not a few calls: there were thousands. They did not occur in one or two ridings: there were at least 18 of them, scattered across the country. In all but one the race was viewed as being between a Conservative and a Liberal, and in every one the calls were made to Liberal supporters. (The NDP now claims to have found nine ridings in which its own supporters received similar calls. These remain to be verified.) In some cases voters were given false information on where to vote by someone pretending to represent Elections Canada. In others, they were annoyed or insulted by calls purporting to come from the Liberal party." Read more

Opposition leaders vow to maintain pressure on Tories over alleged dirty tricks
TORONTO - "The opposition politicians were out in force Saturday fanning the flames created by the election robocall scandal, while the Conservatives offered up their own victim of dirty tricks, an MP who won his seat in a landslide.
Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro, who is Prime Minister Stephen Harper's parliamentary secretary, issued a statement Saturday saying his supporters were targeted by deceitful callers in the lead-up to the May election." Read more

Rae claims 'robocalls' contributed to Liberal candidates' defeat

Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae claims reports of "robocalls" and voter suppression tactics contributed to the defeat of Liberal candidates in at least 27 ridings during the last federal election.

These tactics were the equivalent of "stuffing a ballot box," Rae said at a news conference in the riding of Toronto-Danforth on Saturday.

Rae called on "the prime minister, any Conservative MP, candidate or party official" who has any knowledge of these reports to come forward and turn the information over to the RCMP or Elections Canada for investigation.

According to Rae, these reports are part of a wider misinformation campaign by the Conservatives and he is calling on Parliament to hold an emergency debate on Monday.

MY TAKE:
Listen to Pierre Poilievre especially closely here. They always dig him up when this sort of Robo- Con message is needed. There is no one in Canada better able to lie stone faced to the camera.  During the Contempt hearings and all through the In and out scheme, Poilievre repeated some hundreds of times that it was an "Administrative dispute" and we all know that it was much much more than that.

So listen here carefully and remember this statement by Pierre Poilievre, it will not be the last time that you hear it.
"It is clear that uh, Voter suppression is completely unacceptable, uh, The Conservative party of Canada ran an Ethical and clean campaign and uh, the reality .... the reality is, uh, that uh, we we are never Condone this kind of activity and frankly if anyone has engaged in it and that is proven they should face the full force of the Law."

Suddenly, Dean Del Mastro ~ Con MP/Car-salesman suddenly wakes up from 9 month snooze and remembers rather vaguely that he too was a victim of dirty tricks.

Pat Martin Tweets it as He Sees It! ~ And No Effing Apology Is Needed

WARNING!
This post contains some "Industrial Language."

Just as the Conservative Party has done on eight other occasions including their ridiculous Omnibus Crime Bill, since they became a 'Split-Vote Majority', they have stated recently that they would also seek Closure on the Budget. No more discussion,  just push it through as quietly as possible. These guys like their stealth. There is no doubt that this Closure will happen, and that all debate will stop, in spite of the huge flaws in everything this government authors,  the time for sober thought is over. Or so said the government.

"The best laid plans of mice and men
ofttimes go astray"
It all seemed to be going along so well, just as the prime minister had hoped. But any thoughts that the PMO had that the issue of these repeated and so obviously undemocratic forced closures would escape the somewhat myopic Canadian main-stream-media were suddenly dashed on the evening of November 16th 2011. That was when Pat Martin decided to 'tweet' to the world, or at least to his relatively few followers on Twitter,  (at that point he had only about a thousand) and in his usual raw and passionate style, he said exactly what was on his mind.

Upon a quick reading of that tweet it is not so very hard to sense that he was 'somewhat frustrated' with the way that our long and proud democracy is relentlessly being attacked in the frightening new and still unfolding 'Harper Land.'

When asked repeatedly if he intended to apologise he simply said "No."

He stated very succinctly that he had no intention of retracting any of it. Apparently, unlike the prime minister, Pat Martin knows that it is wrong to make apologies that would not be heartfelt expressions of contrition. Good for You, Mr. Martin, good for You!

And what has become of all this in the first 24 hours?

8:00 pm Thursday
Well, for starters, Pat's Facebook profile has been getting a lot of friend requests, his Facebook page has been collecting a lot of 'likes', both have been getting a lot of traffic as has his Twitter account. It is gaining followers by the hundreds. I took a screen shot at 8 pm. and another a few moments ago, which is only about 6 hours apart. As you can, see the number of his followers has grown by over 1400 in that short time.

2:00 am Friday
And of course, it was a trending topic on Twitter in Canada, if only for about 18 hours or so. That may make Canadians seem somewhat fickle, but nothing changes quite as fast as Twitter's trending topics.

To see real-time stats on Pat Martin's Twitter feed, to see what the fuss is about, or to Follow him Click HERE

The (twitter) exchange was monitored by Martin's (at time of publishing) 1,600 followers and caused a stir throughout the Twitterverse. Martin told the Free Press (Winnipeg) this morning he was surprised by the uproar and admitted he'd had "hundreds" of calls since the tweet last night. "I can't believe that," he said.

He also said that most of the comments he is getting from his own caucus colleagues are supportive because they too are so frustrated by the repeated closure of debate by this government.

It (closure ~ttsm) has happened numerous times this fall including on the omnibus crime bill and the bill to eliminate the monopoly of the Canadian Wheat Board. (And I will add my compliments here to Pat for being the Opposition's most effective speaker on that subject. ~ ttsm)

"It (the original tweet) happened while I was voting. I was looking across at them and thinking they don't even know the damage that they've done," he said of the Conservative MPs. "It took the Liberals 13 years to get this arrogant." (it has taken the Harper Government only 6 months~ ttsm)
Interim NDP Leader, Nycole Turmel is not asking Martin to apologize though she doesn’t agree with his words. "His language was not appropriate and could have been offensive to some. That said, the Conservatives' actions are not appropriate in a democracy and offensive to all Canadians."
Martin is known to be one of the most colourful MPs in the House of Commons and has come under fire numerous times for his comments. "
He also said that it was "industrial language" and that having come from a background of  construction work, he knew that it was the way many Canadians talk. He also pointed out that the word (fuck) was in fact in the dictionary, which of course it is, and that he felt no apology of any kind was necessary.
Go Pat Go!
I agree Pat, there is no need to apologize, and certainly not to me. I cannot imagine having to work so near the prime minister, or any of his raucous caucus, on a daily basis and not wanting to lash out at the mind-numbing idiocy and ideology that has overtaken this once rather civilized country. The time for passively taking Mr. Harper at face value has long since passed. It is time to stand up to this bully once and for all. It is time to expose his every shortcoming. It is time to see him as he really is, and if one has to be that rude to get the attention of  the press, then so be it. I say: Bring it on.
Personally, I just wish that the Corporate owned Media would finally clue in to the fact that all is ^NOT well in Harper Land. They need to understand that the cumulative effect of such a dismal leader's presence among us ( or rather, above us) is more important than their constantly myopic 24 hour news cycle. They really do not seem to 'get' that history is a continuum, that one thing builds on another and that there is a responsibility on their part to see each day in the context of  those days, weeks and years that came before it.

Hell, I am still fuming over the "Income trust scandal", The "In and Out Scheme" and all those other 1200 or more issues that have arisen since Mr. Stephen Joseph Harper has come onto the Canadian political scene.

The real story in Canada  remains the Harper Government's very well documented contempt and ignorance of our parliamentary process. That is the story that needs to be told.

That may or may not happen. But it certainly begs the same old question:

What does it take to wake up a Country when their own so-called main stream media sleeps so soundly, as their own Democracy is under such a threat?

It reminds me of some sedentary and yet,
    very well-paid Rip Van Winkle.

Harperland day 17 ~ Harper Wants Direct Control Over CSIS?

WE WERE WARNED OVER & OVER
In Canada, (1867-2011) the prime minister was the Chair of only one Parliamentary Committee. Stephen Harper plans to change that. He has decided to set up a new Committee, right here in Harperland, of which he will be the Chairman. This guy moves fast. In fact there was even a bit of Confusion surrounding his willingness to hand over power to a coalition even if the governor general gave the go ahead. This was on (day -1 ~ Harperland) back on the eve of the election on May 1st, 2011. Day zero, or election day was no better as Harper openly broke the rules by going on the radio and actually campaigning while the Polls were actually Open!.

The first 100 days may very well be the most troubling in Canada's long history, or Harperland's short history, if you follow me. And I sure hope you do!

Always the optimist, Jack bravely musters his troops!
Combine that with his new-found and ill-gotten total control of the Senate (day 15) and his new 39% majority (day 1), the end of Sheila Frazer's tenure as Auditor General, (day 29) just before the Throne Speech, his appointment of a new very and likely more conservative House Speaker, (day 33), his upcoming opportunities for replacement of three of the nine current Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of Harperland, his dismantling of the Human rights Commissions, (a long time goal, already in progress) his planned new powers over the Internet, and his (so called hidden) Agenda will be complete.  At that point, it may already be too late.   It is ^NOT like there is any way that I can see that  Jack Layton can stop him!
'The way he micro-manages things, he's going to micro-manage that, so we’re going to have Cabinet ministers involved in things they shouldn't be involved in." ~ So says NDP MP Joe Comartin on Prime Minister Stephen Harper's addition of a Cabinet Committee on National Security.
So, where does this leave us? Are there other options?

Will the International Criminal Court suddenly ask us to extradite Harper in connection with the treatment of Afghan Detainees? Probably not! Is lightning likely to strike him as he lights up the barbecue at 24 Sussex? Not very likely, really. Will 12,000,000 Canadians sign a petition asking he be removed from power? Even a ''Conservative' estimate (and those tend to be unreliable 19 times out of Twenty) would make more than 8,000,000 signatures unlikely. Will the "In and Out" scandal "Rise Up" and take him out in the "Mother of all Administrative Disputes"?  Again, not a good bet. Will he suddenly realise that he is a danger to democracy and change his mind? Or realise that he will ^NOT be among the number, come judgement day? I am ^Not convinced.

As fruitless as any of these avenues are likely to be, just listing them is a helpful exercise, as any among us who hold any hope for any of these astronomical improbabilities, has already realised the necessity of stopping his headlong descent into infamy. He can not be allowed to implicate us in that infamy, nor can we stand by and be judged complicit in this affront to all things Canadian.

We are many.  We are smart. We are brave. We have information. We have voices. We have each other.

What we do not have is Mainstream Media that can be counted on. What we do not have is Corporate support. What we do not have is a magic spell, potion or wand. But most of all, what we do ^NOT have is Four more years.

An Afterthought: I just opted in at OpenParliament.ca to get news whenever my ( ughh!) Newly elected Conservative MP opens his mouth in Parliament. Straight to my email! Harper Looks Prime Miserable to Me! ~ He is our Prime Misery!

Debating the Debate

As Long as the Main Stream Media Believes
That Harper Owns the Economy We are Screwed!

The Debate is still a recent event, and it will be getting a Good going over today and for the rest of the Campaign period. As I watch the hapless and incredibly Conservative Evan Solomon, I am reminded of how much Power is in the hands of the Media here in Canada.

So Far they seem to be Mindlessly Bobbling their way through. Bobble Heads are Not Great media. They are in a very real sense among the elitists in this Country, they have things to defend and they will protect their turf. With the exceptions of the veterans; Robert Fife, and Terry Milewski, for instance, I feel that they come off as much less than sincere.

They are quite easy on the Prime Miserable in My Opinion. Do they ever ask (themselves) why everyone is picking on Harper? No, they just say he is... holding up well. They are also saying over and over, that he looked Directly into the Camera. He looked weird to me, and he was Not actually looking into the camera. He was focused at a point just to his Right of the lens. Very Odd indeed. A more reasonable observation would have been to point out his failure to look his opponents in the eye. That is after-all what got us to this point in time. The MSM's myopia reminds me of Bob Cole, who would benefit from a more careful look at the replays, instead of repeating his original missed call.

Hell, were they expecting him to be nervous, or contrite, or reactive, during all of those well deserved criticisms? By what mechanism? He has No Conscience. He is convinced that Supporting Exxon over Canadian citizens is the right thing to do. He is the Immovable Object. I thought he looked anal, and emasculate. He 'pretends' that he is the Victim here and they in the MSM do NOT tell us the Difference. I am still waiting for an apology from Mr. Harper. Instead what we get is a complete denial of the charges. It is interesting that the defendant, now found guilty is now framing it as him having been framed and that it was atrivial Bickering. Enter the Bobble-heads to nod away and agree that it really was nothing. Apparently Contempt is acceptable to a surprising number of Canadians. I feel very differently on the subject as you already know.

I am Not impressed! I thought Harper was evasive, smarmy, misguided and robotic. I wouldn't trust him to feed my Cat!

At Least He Looked Prime Miserable!

Take the man-Child Out of a place of authority, and figure out a way to put him back in the tube. The fact that he cannot even look the other guys in the eyes should tell us all that we need to know!

In the entire two hours of the debate Harper stared at a spot on the floor somewhere near Duceppe's feet and never looked into the Camera. The Main Stream Media came out saying that Harper held his own during this debate. I didn't see it that way. But since I consider him a Child, I will tell you how other kids saw it!

Ignatieff Draws Praise while Harper Criticized for Lacklustre Debate Performance
EDMONTON — Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff won the televised leaders’ debate after he stopped dumbing down his arguments and started acting like himself, say the three student debaters who participated in the Edmonton Journal’s live chat.

Ignatieff’s impassioned plea for the role of the federal government in supporting equal access to health care across Canada was his strongest point, the three said.

“He had the most consistent message,” Kristen Pue said, adding he also backed up his statements with more examples than the other leaders.

He looked relaxed, and when taking questions from Canadians he answered directly and remembered the questioner’s name, said Sheida Kayat, who judges debates for the University of Alberta Debate Society, the oldest club on campus.

"Nearly 300 participants in the live chat were asked at the beginning who they thought would debate the best, and Harper won out with 38 per cent expecting good things from him.

But by the end of the debate, opinion turned against him. When asked who won the debate, 44 per cent of those on the live
chat voted for Ignatieff. Layton got 41 per cent while 15 per cent thought Harper won the debate. No one voted for Duceppe."
So What Is Real Leadership?

If Any of you 'PMO' Types are looking at this and I somehow doubt you are. I need to know if this is Jenni Byrne. It was sent to me and it is supposed to come from Jenni's facebook Profile.
Apparently She is NOT a very nice human being. If you do NOT know who she is, She is in charge of Harper's re-election Campaign, and is Noted as a problem-child, just like her boss!

Now we need to Figure out How to Get this Mean Genie back in the Bottle, or more accurately this strange Blue Goo back into the tube. A lot of people who are as hated as Harper would just crawl back in and Go away.
Mr. Harper is ^NOT the type to do that. He will need to go down in flames in order to get the point. He does ^NOT seem to understand that he is being held in Contempt by so very many of us.

On May 2nd
Vote for DEMOCRACY

Canadians Owe Huge Thanks to Wikileaks As Haters 'Out' Themselves!

<><><><><>

If there has been one unexpected but Absolutely Delicious Consequence of the Wikileaks Phenomenon, it has been the Over-the-Top and possibly illegal reaction of the Right Wing of Canadian Politics. Although the Government and the PMO have been relatively quiet, Some of their Outriders have been saying some very Hateful things! Some of them have even aligned themselves with outspoken and dubious Americans like Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck and the always oddly irregular Sarah Palin, whose nonsense I will spare you here.

As Canadians, we have expectations that certain lines will not be crossed. But since many of us have the ability to watch Fox News, even if they are like me and choose not to, many of us have come to expect Fox 'Actors" who masquerade as Newsmen like O'Reilly to do what  Americans and step over the line. That line does not seem to exist there and their kind of hateful speech is perfectly  legal in the U.S of A. Supposedly it's legality is not the case here. So lets watch Bill O'Reilly in action to see how the real American Right Wing Pros do it!

For years, a man named Tom Flanagan, himself an American, who arrived here in 1968 during the Vietnam War, as a young man has been actively mentoring Stephen Harper, and giving him the benefit of his American style Rovian political tactics. Last week he absolutely 'lost it' on CBC's Power and Politics and in a moment in which he felt as he said 'manly" asked for an Assassination attempt on the Leader of Wikileaks.

He did Bow to Pressure and quietly express regrets, if only regrets, which some have called an apology, but I call it an expression of regret as in: Gee! 'I wish I had not said that on National Television', but I'll let you decide if you think that he was actually being remorseful.

If you still do not know who Tom Flanagan is, even after his call to have Wikileaks CEO " Julian Assange Assassinated, it is high time that you did. Here is a Brief Primer from Wikipedia which should give you a better idea of his career as a Right Wing proselytiser and as an advisor to Stephen Harper and to the  now defunct Reform Party and the no longer Progressive, Conservative Party of Canada, a Coalition of the Right which resulted from what amounts to a Hostile Takeover of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.

And, just to establish that this man fully supports Harper's Government, even when they are caught being shady, let's have a look as he Confidently proclaims the " 'In and Out' Scandal " to be 'Technically' Legal, way back in September of 2007, soon after the story of this outrage against Elections Canada rules first broke.
It reamains a bone of contention even today and We are talking about the 2006 election here.

He is still a friend of the Conservatives but they are a nervous and fickle bunch if you cross them and just after 2nd Surprise Prorogation, on Dec. 30, 2009, he got himself in Hot Water and was suddenly on the outs with the Party that his influence helped to form. He is now back in the loving arms of Harper but when this was taped, some of the more nebulous members of the party seemed to not know him.

In a bizarre Twist, it was revealed just Yesterday, that the enigmatic and often controversial Flanagan has aimed a threat at a private Canadian Citizen, who was concerned about his behavior and lack of remorse and who had emailed Flanagan to express her displeasure. Flanagan wrote back to her and according to the Toronto woman she claims that she felt threatened by an e-mail response that she says that she received from the former adviser to Stephen Harper at the centre of a controversy over his comments about WikiLeaks.

As the calls for Flanagan's removal from the CBC Payroll get louder and louder and the list of those, myself included, who would like to see him defend himself in a Court of Law for this outrage, it has been reported that "Calgary Police are Investigating Charges Against Him". His real Employer, the University of Calgary, at which Flanagan is a tenured professor, Is also getting such complaints but so far I at least have not been able to find an official response from them. Or I hadn't until an hour ago when I got this through a friend.

‎"A University of Calgary spokesman said statements made by Mr. Flanagan do not represent the views of the institution and no disciplinary action is being considered."

She suggests that we each write a letter to all the Depts. at the U of C and I think it is a great idea, she even has written one that should do nicely or for more impact, write your own.

Re: Tom Flanagan's Death Threat

I can hardly believe a Canadian citizen, a university professor no less, would advocate for the death of a news reporter. A sad day for Canada. Isn't uttering death threats considered illegal in Canada?

If people are to believe even somewhat in the "culture" of a political party, then Tom Flanagan's words should be an alert to Canadians that people in and related to our current government do think they are above the law. What arrogance. How immoral.

I call on the University of Calgary to accept Tom Flanagan's resignation.

Respectfully,

[  your name here  ]

As if that was not quite helpful enough, she also provided us with this amazing list of email addresses representing All things U of C. It even contains all the commas it needs to be Dragged and Dropped right into your Email Outbox. That should get 'em talking at the Water Coolers all over the campus.

Remember Flanagan responded to the pressure and at least pretended to apologise once so you can see a little pressure can go a long, long way.
