Harper Knows His Base ~ And So Do We

I have been writing on the internet as the Twain Shall Meet for about seven years now. For the first two years I was only on the discussion boards at MSM web pages, and commenting on News articles.

And I have gleaned a fact or two about the conservative base. I don't claim to have ever made any of them less conservative. It seems that that has never been an option. Though I have had countless interactions with the far Right, I don't believe we can change them. Intransigent as they are we can still defeat them and their right wing ideologies, we simply have got to out number them, not on the discussion sites, but at the polls on election day.

When dealing with the far right I have tried to offer links to information that sheds light on the subject and hand. They don't read them.

This was a comment from a CPC supporter on CBC.ca ~ The article was discussing whether harper would prorogue Paliament to hide from the Senate ?PMO scandal.

Of course they'll recess early. The union-loving NDP think all people need the summer off and the Liberals need a break too to stew about electing the Papineau Pony to run their ship into the ground.

Sometimes I ask questions
of them that require them doing research. They generally do not do that research and the questions go unanswered.

everyone here thumbs ProudAB down but, he is, of course, right. Harper has to take the hit but it is the front line civil servant that has dropped the ball along with their less than satisfactory managers that as yet have not instilled the importance of securing their computers and flash drives.
As well, you all hate Harper so much and I find it odd yop don't realize that the civil servants do as well. They do not cooperate with the government of the day if they don't like them and they slow down productivity, lost things or misplace them etc. Meanwhile, because they can't be fired without an act of Parliament short of them committing murder, their managers' hands are tied.

Sometimes I notice them trying to turn the channel.
Now, who does that remind you of, eh?

CBC Under Seige ~ SUNTV and the Attack of the Neo-Clones!

CBC would lose $532-million annually if forced to give up advertising, loss would have devastating impact on Canadian television production industry, says groundbreaking report
The Hill Times just let me in on a bit of tyranny. Are they complicit in it? No, but they did not provide any time for a rebuttal there, either. They have no comment section. Like most of the puppet Media they are a monologue. It reminds me of the style of communication most favoured by 'dear leader'.

Mr. Harper,
have you got a minute?
No! Not really!
So, do they really want our state broadcaster to give up advertising? Not really. Just having some fun at CBC's expense? Not really. But how is this really dumb bit of tangential thinking relevent? It is Not. Not really. Is there a TV network in the world that would be able to survive without advertising? NO, not really. Not without a government that was accountable enough to allow that. Are they offering to make up the shortfall?  Hell NO!

Bob Dylan once said: "You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows" And you do not need a study to know this. Would any man on Earth not die if he stopped breathing? I don't know, let's commission a study. All we need is every man on Earth ........ and a very strong mandate.

homer-choking-bart-funny-animated-gifSo, if this is not a "groundbreaking study" as the possible dullard above suggested, what on Earth could it mean? Is it a threat?  Not really. Is it a chance to broach the subject and get us used to the idea that the CBC is our enemy, and not just the enemy of ever tightening Government control? That may be closer to the truth. I mean seriously, who is even suggesting this? And for what purpose?

Or, like my grandmother would have said: WTF?

C.A.P.P
The Canadian
Ass. of
Parliamentary Prorogers

The bright side! If that means that the government foots the bill as it is intended to do, and releases CBC from the necessity of advertising, that might just be OK. At least it would mean that we could watch our state TV and would see no more CAPP ads, no more 'Drugs are the road to hell' ads, No more Character assinating attack ads, No more self promoting Stimulus ads, no more 'Give us your young' Military ads, no more Federal government propaganda in bright Canadian Blue. If that were the case I am willing to consider it! That is not what is going on here.

There are already real rumblings that the Harper government is thinking about severely cutting the CBC's funding and now this nonesense? This contrived and stupid mocked up scenario about how they would die if suddenly the government were to stop allowing them to compete for advertising revenues? Is anyone really saying this? And they call themselves a 'government with a mandate' and claim to be protectors of democracy?

These men are idiots. But lately it seems that they are everywhere. Is there nowhere in this Country where a man can get some rest? Sorry, but as I was typing that, history was being re-written in HarperLand. They just now voted down the Canadian Wheat Board! Canada as breadbasket to the world is no more.  I can almost hear Pat Martin uttering the Eff Word!

From the article:
" The study was released Monday after nearly two months of Conservative pressure against the CBC in Parliament, led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper's (Calgary Southwest, Alta.) Parliamentary Secretary, Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro (Peterborough, Ont.). The CBC has also been under assault from Quebecor Inc., the private-sector media giant in Quebec.

The study warned that without ad revenues, CBC would likely eventually reach a “tipping point” where it would be unable to meet its mandate under the Broadcasting Act. "
Hey? George Stroumboulopoulos? Is there a more modern Chapter being written for "Love Hate and Propaganda"?  It seems that it is also being written as we speak.

This article is pure propaganda in it's worst form. The writer acts as if this is all just business as usual, and that if he writes 'matter of factly' enough, we will mistake it as reality. Some, I suspect will do exactly that. But the fact remains that attacking a state broadcaster, is a very necessary tactic in any fascist state.
See how Harper stacks up!

There is still time before he
prorogues for Christmas
to wish Humpty Harper
a Great Fall

Attempting to limit the scope of, or any attempts to limit the content of the CBC is an overt attempt to control the fifth estate and it must be seen as a precursor to total control. It would also represent the Corporate rape of a government subsidized institution that does seriously good work, especially in the remote rural districts (although the loss of analogue signal has left countless rural dwellers with no access to TV of any kind) by the very government that is supposed to be protecting it.

The Conservatives (and the Republicans in the USA) have long been mis-representing the bias in the media, and although the media is mostly scared to death of them they claim that the press can not be trusted. At least a handful of Canadian journalists occasionally stand up and give us the goods on that conservative spin. It should happen more often.

At the 2:22 mark Harper Clearly says: "I don't think the public cares" and he repeats it!

And like I have mentioned before, Stephen Harper claims to be a human and real studies prove that humans are unsustainable when they have their air supply cut off. And since he breathes propaganda and needs to control all things, he will not overlook the state broadcaster. It would be untrue to even pretend that that is not the case. No folks, he breathes control. And now he has the added bonus of a warm glow from the ever shining SUNTV.

A Plea to Save the CBC
In the real world, Homer would have done Bart in long ago. And that is not a threat, it is another example of the kind of propaganda that we have above. They are subliminally trying to get us all used to the idea that it will all be OK and that the Government would be justified in choking the life out of the State Broadcaster.

And again, history says that Stalin would approve. And according to some, Russian state media has never recovered from his control. The Russian media is still protecting him. But he went well beyond threats. Will Harper?

And one more time, to the Hill Times, who's article has no comment board: This is not a real study. If it were it would not contain the word 'IF' 5 times in only seven paragraphs. It is a study in propaganda. (Notice how I keep repeating that word?) I 'get' Propaganda!

p.s. Dean Del Mastro.... shudddder!
It seems
you just keep
helping me write my blog!
Thanks!

Would Stephen Harper Qualify to Become a CPC Member?

Does
If you don't ask, I won't tell.
A good friend of mine over at C.R.U.S.H. ~ Canadians Rallying to Unseat Stephen Harper, asked a question today. And yes, it is the same question that any Canadian, ^NOT entirely in the dark about 'dear leader' asks every other day:
"What needs to happen to rid this country of Stephen Joseph Harper"?

So, we batted around the same tired old ideas, all of which could potentially work and in fact should work, but none of which succeed for various reasons.

Those tactics have included, among other things; defeating him in a General Election, having him arrested or rendered (a word that many governments use when someone is kidnapped by them. Of course if we did it it would be called kidnapping) and have him sent to The Hague in Switzerland, along with his old friends George W. Bush and Dick Cheney to face justice at the International Criminal Court. We considered also, getting the 'owned' and generally myopic, non-testicular, (having to do with the lacking of balls) and willingly sycophantic (sadly having to do with the Licking of balls) Canadian Mainstream Media to co-operate, and the waking of Canadians to political realities and the now 1200 reasons (here are 100 of them that were compiled back when it would have been easier) that he is ^NOT a leader and how how and why he simply can ^NOT be trusted.

But today was somehow different. Something was suggested that I had not heard before, a tactic so unthinkable, so repulsive as to have gone without consideration by anyone at C.R.U.S.H. for the last two years. It was a tactic that would require brashness and bravery, a very strong stomach and the willingness to work with some very unsavoury characters. It was suggested that we consider joining the Conservative Party of Canada en mass and bring it down from within. It was suggested that we become as it were, a Trojan Horse or as a more modern mind would put it, infiltrate the borg. Well, that was certainly ^NOT on my agenda, but since I have not yet given up and will never succumb to the notion that resistance is futile I agreed to consider it.

So, I decided to see just who qualified to join the Borg. I quickly found this information:

Founding Principles eh? Well, I doubted that I could possibly agree with them, I am no Conservative, but it might be worth a look. What harm could it do,  just to have a look?
And as I read them it occured to me that many of them do not seem to be principles that I would ever have attributed to Stephen Harper. Lets just pick a few that help to add the light of day to those doubts.

1.) "A balance between fiscal accountability, progressive social policy and individual rights and responsibilities" ~ Well, that is the first one on their list, and although I agree with it, does Harper?

Are they fiscally accountable?

No. They were forced to reveal the numbers last Fall and even then they faked most of them, and ended up being charged with contempt because of it. They still have not released any real numbers since they took office. They are in aconstant fight with the Parliamentary Budget Officer over exactly that.

Are they in favour of progressive social policy?

No. they want to jail as many Canadians as the existing prisons will hold, and then build more prisons. Every expert in Canada says that this will lead to higher residivism rates and that it will all contribute to poverty and despair.

Are they defenders of our Indivdual rights?

No. Individual rights have begun to deteriorate under harper. Even as a minority prime minister, he started limiting personal rights. As I write this he continues to allow Canadians to be arrested and abused simply for assembling in peaceful protest and has been much less tolerant of dissent than any other government in our history. His imprudent use of Toronto as a backdrop to the 2010 G20 was an exercise in state power and control. 1130 persons were hauled off to spend an average of 24 hours in cages that just happened to be there for the purpose. The Occupy Movement has only highlighted his contempt for th eindividual rights of Canadians. His party is the only one to show no signs of even admuitting that their is a difference between Billionaires and the homeless.

Individual responsibilities?
Hell yeah, that part he agrees with. Never in our history has so much time, money and effort been levied against us to teach us about our personal and individual responsibilities. There is very likely a second recession on it's way and it is going to be our responsibility to ride it out while we suffer cuts and fewer services. The fact that it is not our doing does not stop it from being our responsibility.

That is just the first bullet point above and already it is apparent that Stephen Joseph is not qualified to be even a member of the party, let alone it's leader.

The list of requisite conservative beliefs goes on to include a belief in our Parliamentary institutions, a respect for the rule of Law, a belief in the Environment, a belief in the equality of all Canadians, a belief that good government is responsive and attentive to the needs of it's citizens.......

The list is long and none of it confirms that Stephen Harper is qualified to be a member of that party in any real sense. I could go on,  and over the next few days, I will probbably flesh this thought process out a bit, but my point is already made. I can add lnks to the web that demonstrate all of these concerns, and I may do that, but It may be time that those who wrote this charter and founding principles actually took them to heart, and considered how very far off the mark that this little man has taken them.

So, No, I was wrong above and could easily join a party that stood for all of these great principles, but if anyone in the know thinks that it is possible for a party to do so with this fopp at the helm, they are either sadly mistaken or taking a page out of the Neo-con book and lying!

That, I believe is exactly what Stephen Harper has been doing for the past 15 years. It should be obvious that he can ^NOT be trusted. I mean seriously, if he really cared in the least about the values listed above, would he put up with the likes of  Tony, 'hands in the till' Clement?

Please feel free to comment below. I will have little trouble answering any of your questions. The proof is everywhere if you open those baby blues.

From Shakespeare to Harperspeak ~ A Satirical Exercise in Propaganda

Have you ever played that old children's game where you have to unscramble a word or phrase and hopefully get a perfect score by using all of the letters to make another word or phrase and even better, a word or phrase that relates somehow to the first? Well, most nerds have.

About an hour ago, I was asked on a whim to unscramble the word 'Shakespeare', who was himself somewhat of a nerd. Well, try as I might I could not get that perfect score, but I did notice almost immediately that it comes amazingly close to spelling what just so happens to be one of my favorite new Canadian words ~ 'Harperspeak'.

I kid you not. And if that seems somehow inconsequential, keep in mind that both of these men are considered by many, to be nerds but that each has found a unique way to use language to dominate the conversation in their own sphere. Shakespeare has influenced the language throughout the entire English-speaking world, with his brilliant use of phrase and neology and Harper has become the master of tricky and nebulous word games and ideology right here in Harper Land.

W. Shakespeare used great and innovative language to say great and interesting things.  S. Harper uses manipulative language to make what are otherwise obviously bad ideas seem reasonable, and to some who do not play or understand the game, he makes those bad ideas sound great.

Therein lies the origin of the word "Harperspeak" ~ a word which signifies Stephen Harper's very personal form of Neo-Con propaganda.

Let me be clear..... (I couldn't resist) I am forcing the issue to make a point.  And if you were to do the exercise at the top of the post, you would soon discover, as I did, that there are one too many 'S's and one too few 'R's and an 'E' that would need to be a 'P'.  So, an honest man would have to admit that it cannot be done and declare: "All bets are off", and look for a better solution to the puzzle.

Then again, this experiment is about great wordsmiths, and propaganda after all, so I am going to use some of that famous Harper Conservative rhetoric that has become all the rage in Canada lately and cheat a tiny little bit. I will make that square peg fit that round hole yet. Just like Harper would do.

Any Neo-Con worth even half of the huge amount of tax money he wastes, has managed to develop and even, in Harper's case, to perfect the habit of changing a few small facts to fit the message that he wants to promote and pass it off, no matter how ridiculous, no matter the real evidence, as the truth.

So, let's imagine that William Shakespeare was really named Richard (a small lie, really) and try it again!

Oh, that is so much better.
In fact it is now Perfect. Or at least it would be if that pesky last 'E' had not mysteriously and inexplicably become a 'P'.  So how do we explain all that away in order to make this lie seem somehow true?  Let's simply pretend that we can justify the 'E' to 'P' issue as if it were signifying a transformation from great 'English' to great 'Propaganda'.

Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket. And now that Mr. Shakespeare is known as Richard, the ruse is entirely complete.
After all, that would, at least as far as I am concerned, make them both nerds, both wordsmiths, both famous and both now Dicks.

With sincere and posthumous apologies to William Shakespeare

David Anderson, Conservative MP Dumps Offensive Video, But it is Still on Youtube! and it is still offensive!

It is true that David Anderson, Conservative MP from Saskatchewan has taken his offensive video off of his Official Webpage. It is also true that it remains where he either had it posted or found it on Youtube over 11 months ago. That bit of information seems to be intentionally being overlooked by the CBC and others in the Main Stream Media.

On the one hand that gives it less visibility, but does nothing to address the issue that it is still there and the Moniker that claims it has just now justified it's existance.

It is also true that Anderson admits that it contained offensive and unnecessary language insulting to many of Canada's First Nations citizens. Add to that that he fell short of an apology, and last and certainly much more newsworthy, the fact that it remains on Youtube!

I took these screen shots just an hour ago.

This is from the Youtube account of TheSaskFarmer, where the video can still be seen above, taking credit for composing the video. As I point out this is far from an apology, and it comes 11 months after the initial posting. I suspect that he was in part responsible for getting it on Anderson's website. I also suspect that he was very proud to have done so.

He even had the nerve to call it CWB propaganda, even thoughhe had written it himself
and completely ignored the insanity of the argument he was making on their behalf.
Sure, it was Propaganda, but come on! He wrote it himself.
This is a sample of intelligent comments (they were not all so sensitive) that are found there.

At any rate, this behavior is not what we expect from a Parliamentary Secretary in a serious and trustworthy government. But I am guessing that many of us are getting to the point where we take everything that the Harper Government has to say about anything with a grain of salt. And therein lies the sadness.

Living in Harperland with Ezra Levant ~ NeoCons Defunding Democracy

Ezra Levant thinks or at least says that since James Moore, CPC MP and Harperland Minister in charge over at the Harperland Heritage Department sponsors what he considers to be really bad punk bands, that the CBC should therefore be defunded? A very round-about and subliminal message from a man who claims to defend Free speech, don'tcha think?

But of course, being Ezra, a Rovian and a somewhat stressed-out Straussian at heart, he (pretends?) to assail Harper and bad punk music and turns it all, oddly enough, into a twisted plea to shut down our public broadcaster.

It brilliantly weaves into the mix, the doubtful role of cultural funding in Harperland the presumption of his being an expert in things musical, gets in a lick or two at a government that he is known to support, (for balance?) and attacks the only public media in the country. A CBC which needs, in my opinion a lot less Government meddling.  The media IMO needs to be separate from both religion and state. We need the Canadian Broadcasting Company to be more independent and under much less mean spirited Right winged political pressure.

The Harper government has a four year 40% mandate, but the CBC has in the mind of Canadians, a much longer 65% mandate. It really is our last line of defence. It needs to be there and be independent and unintimidated when the Next Election, or even the next Harper vs. Harperland or vise versa court case comes up. And they will come up. But will they come up before he softens the judiciary? Let's hope.

Harper has been implicated in some very serious stuff, at some point the courts are bound to somehow deny a final appeal eventually. A lot of Canadians are not aware of just how much of Harper's future is now in the hands of the courts. We need independent media, and free social media so that those of us who get this stuff, are able to share it. I say share it freely.

He makes no mention of the role of such fine institutions as the SUN though. Besides it is an entirely private enterprise which just happens to have a new competing (AS IF) news service of it's own. It is a bargain at half the price and generally well worth the ?? 25 cents ?? that a hard-copy is going for on weekdays here in Harperland.
" Stephen Harper says he needs to find $4 billion to cut to meet his campaign platform.
Where should he start? Transfers to hospitals and schools? Equipment for our soldiers in danger?
No. He should privatize the CBC and let Living With Lions busk for a living.
It’s not even a question of taste or art. It’s about whether something that calls itself a Conservative government can continue to fund a state broadcaster and have bigoted punk bands on the public dime."
I really wanted to comment there but the defender of Free speech himself writes a SUN blog that does ^NOT allow comments. It is sad really! Come on SUN open it up!

I await a reply. If you are an Ezra fan let him and the editors over there know that we are waiting over here.

Love the logic Ezra. Living with lions sucks (that much is true enough but just for kicks let me add that they received a Whopping one one hundred thousandth of the cost of the G20) so let's Scrap the CBC. And the way you worked the word 'bigoted' in there was awesome. You are such a pro.

At least you got the part about the band being bad right.  But that is ^NOT your call. Nor is it mine.

Ezra says he has Flavourful Opinions. You'll have to decide exactly what flavour that is. I couldn't possibly comment.

Harperland day 17 ~ Harper Wants Direct Control Over CSIS?

WE WERE WARNED OVER & OVER
In Canada, (1867-2011) the prime minister was the Chair of only one Parliamentary Committee. Stephen Harper plans to change that. He has decided to set up a new Committee, right here in Harperland, of which he will be the Chairman. This guy moves fast. In fact there was even a bit of Confusion surrounding his willingness to hand over power to a coalition even if the governor general gave the go ahead. This was on (day -1 ~ Harperland) back on the eve of the election on May 1st, 2011. Day zero, or election day was no better as Harper openly broke the rules by going on the radio and actually campaigning while the Polls were actually Open!.

The first 100 days may very well be the most troubling in Canada's long history, or Harperland's short history, if you follow me. And I sure hope you do!

Always the optimist, Jack bravely musters his troops!
Combine that with his new-found and ill-gotten total control of the Senate (day 15) and his new 39% majority (day 1), the end of Sheila Frazer's tenure as Auditor General, (day 29) just before the Throne Speech, his appointment of a new very and likely more conservative House Speaker, (day 33), his upcoming opportunities for replacement of three of the nine current Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of Harperland, his dismantling of the Human rights Commissions, (a long time goal, already in progress) his planned new powers over the Internet, and his (so called hidden) Agenda will be complete.  At that point, it may already be too late.   It is ^NOT like there is any way that I can see that  Jack Layton can stop him!
'The way he micro-manages things, he's going to micro-manage that, so we’re going to have Cabinet ministers involved in things they shouldn't be involved in." ~ So says NDP MP Joe Comartin on Prime Minister Stephen Harper's addition of a Cabinet Committee on National Security.
So, where does this leave us? Are there other options?

Will the International Criminal Court suddenly ask us to extradite Harper in connection with the treatment of Afghan Detainees? Probably not! Is lightning likely to strike him as he lights up the barbecue at 24 Sussex? Not very likely, really. Will 12,000,000 Canadians sign a petition asking he be removed from power? Even a ''Conservative' estimate (and those tend to be unreliable 19 times out of Twenty) would make more than 8,000,000 signatures unlikely. Will the "In and Out" scandal "Rise Up" and take him out in the "Mother of all Administrative Disputes"?  Again, not a good bet. Will he suddenly realise that he is a danger to democracy and change his mind? Or realise that he will ^NOT be among the number, come judgement day? I am ^Not convinced.

As fruitless as any of these avenues are likely to be, just listing them is a helpful exercise, as any among us who hold any hope for any of these astronomical improbabilities, has already realised the necessity of stopping his headlong descent into infamy. He can not be allowed to implicate us in that infamy, nor can we stand by and be judged complicit in this affront to all things Canadian.

We are many.  We are smart. We are brave. We have information. We have voices. We have each other.

What we do not have is Mainstream Media that can be counted on. What we do not have is Corporate support. What we do not have is a magic spell, potion or wand. But most of all, what we do ^NOT have is Four more years.

An Afterthought: I just opted in at OpenParliament.ca to get news whenever my ( ughh!) Newly elected Conservative MP opens his mouth in Parliament. Straight to my email! Meet the First Harperland Cabinet ~ A Simple Photo Opportunity?

Mark My Words Folks, the next four years are ^NOT going to be good years for this country. Not on your life. Late last year, back in Canada, when it was announced that the name of the government was being changed, I was against formally calling 'The Government of Canada', "The Harper Government" and made myself heard on the subject But this new twist, this strange new twist, has me thinking that I would be very much in favour of renaming this Great Country, so long known as the Dominion of Canada, to the more appropriate "Harperland". Welcome fellow Harperlanders (it's OK you'll get used to it) to the first few days of a Harper Majority. Hold onto your hats, hide the silverware, and remember:         Take ^Notes.

       So, WELCOME TO HARPERLAND!

No, I haven't completely lost it, ( just yet) but I want it to be easy to keep this four and a half years separate from the first one hundred thirty four years of Canada's proud history, at least in people minds. I want everyone to know that this is ^NOT the Canada of Diefenbaker. This is not the Canada of; Pearson, Trudeau, Clark, Campbell, Mulroney, Chretien, Stanfield, Martin and this is not the Canada of the "Minority Harper Government".  No, this is a brand new entity. This is ^NOT Canada as I recognize it.

Neither am I suggesting that we forget the lessons learned during the Minority Harper Government, as it is obvious that these lessons were never really learned. The information is still there though, and even the over zealous Stephen Harper will ^NOT be able to hide it. He will however, double, re-double and again re-double his grip on Harperland and most of that in the next 100 days. I will be doing my best to chronical at least some of this huge undertaking.

The New Harperland cabinet was announced today, may 18, 2011, although a lot of it, was released last night, as harper was bursting at the seams like the suitcoat he bought last fall is now bursting at the seams, to get the Good News out there. (see the previous blog post, just below)

~ The first Harperland Ubercabinet ~
        ~ A Photo-Opportunistic Adventure in Pomp & Metaphor ~

I have just got to admit that I see pure metaphor in the image behind this group of Harperland's Founders.  In this beautiful bewitching painting (see below for details) the local people are gathering, coming from all directions, from far and wide, their mouths agape, their innocent faces turned upward, on an up hill climb, staring awestruck at the huge figure of a big blue Bird, who is itself being seemingly adored by another closer, darker group. Am I reading too much into it? I sure hope so.

If you are new to this, start with this smaller group:

So, Keep busy, Stay awake, Take notes, Hide the silverware. I'll be back!

But, Before I go, I want to reassure you that although I have no real faith in Harper or anyone in his cabinet, I am aware that there are still real heros in the world. And that brings me back full circle to the Painting behind the man behind the curtain!
(thanks to Karen C for the reminder)

This painting was done by a man who never set foot in Harper land. He spent his entire life as a Canadian and he was a beautiful Canadian. He was an amazing painter.

please have a look.

Seriously, I'll be back. thanks.
